Can a man, even so, among others on earth
Be whole, as he would like to be?
--I thought it over, through a long night, and I had to say no!
So can I call no one by name on earth
And will no one be mine?
--A gleam of joy starts luminously from the gloom in me:
Should I not be able to be with God,
As I would like, mine and yours?
What held me back, that I have not come to Him by now?
A sweet terror goes through my bones!
It amazes me that it seemed a miracle
To have God alone as my own on the earth!
